Since then Dorsey has been in other critically acclaimed films such as Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained” in 2012; the film won Best Original Screenplay at the 85th Academy Awards and was named one of the Top Ten Movies of the Year by the American Film Institute. Dorsey showcased versatility in the film by playing the character of Chicken Charlie, a slave. Omar J. Dorsey was born in Decatur, Ga., to the Rev. Dr. Oliver Dorsey and Dr. Naomi Dorsey, a stage actor and director. Omar accompanied his mother to various rehearsals and shows and at a young age he began acting. Dorsey concentrated in acting while he attended the Dekalb School of the Arts and this experience was the catalyst for many of his future endeavors.
In 1994 Dorsey earned a full academic scholarship to Georgia State University (GSU). While attending GSU Dorsey began his professional acting career at 7 Stages Theatre, where he traveled extensively throughout the globe for the better part of three years. While many actors at his level were working with their peers, Omar was working alongside seasoned professionals who provided him with their experiences and proven techniques.
During this time Dorsey studied under several of Atlanta’s veteran actors including Freddie Hendricks, Del Hamilton, Faye Allen and NAACP Image Award-winning actor Afemo Omilami. It was Omilami who took a particular interest in Omar and a strong mentorship was formed. The lessons Dorsey learned from Omilami were pivotal in his social and artistic development.
Dorsey’s junior film professor Sheldon Schiffer taught Omar directing as well as how to act for the camera, not just the stage. It was Schiffer who suggested Omar change his major to film however after college Omar still wanted to direct. In 1999 everything changed when Dorsey landed a role in Todd Phillips’ first film and again realized his love for acting.
Playing Lawrence in “Road Trip” was the first of three Phillips’ films Dorsey would be a part of. A year later Omar booked a role in the cult classic “Drumline” starring Nick Cannon and shortly thereafter, "The Blind Side."
In June 2013 he was cast as Dontel Benjamin in the final season of the HBO series “Eastbound & Down.” Dorsey will also co-star as Roy in FOX’s new series “Rake” alongside Academy Award nominee Greg Kinnear.
Through his off-screen work Dorsey has branded himself as a mentor and humanitarian. When not in production, he lives in Los Angeles with his wife and daughters.
